【How to Enjoy Tamago Kake Gohan】Japan’s Ultimate Rice and Egg Dish

I love tamago kake gohan.

It’s a simple dish made by mixing hot rice with raw eggs and soy sauce. It’s incredibly easy to prepare, but so delicious! When I’m short on time, I often enjoy this quick and satisfying meal. In Japan, eggs are carefully managed to be safe for eating raw, so you can enjoy them without worry.

Here are some of my favorite ways to enjoy tamago kake gohan:

1. Tamago Kake Gohan with Chopped Avocado and Wasabi

Adding chopped avocado and a little wasabi makes it even better! You can also mix the avocado with mayonnaise. This combination alone is delicious, but when you add it to rice and egg, it becomes a complete meal.

2. Fluffy Meringue Style

Whip only the egg whites until they become fluffy like a meringue. Place the fluffy whites on top of the rice, then gently set the yolk on top. Of course, finish with a little soy sauce. It looks beautiful and tastes amazing!

3. With Salt and Sesame Oil

This is a simple variation — no soy sauce needed. Just sprinkle a little salt and drizzle sesame oil over the egg and rice. Top it off with some finely chopped green onions for an extra burst of flavor. So simple, yet so delicious!

Currently, my son is only one year old, so he can’t eat tamago kake gohan yet. (In Japan, it’s recommended to wait until around age three to eat raw eggs. This is to avoid the risk of food poisoning from bacteria like salmonella, as young children have weaker immune systems.)

But someday, I hope he’ll become a tamago kake gohan lover too!

Sometimes you can find tamago kake gohan served at traditional Japanese inns (ryokan) for breakfast. If you feel unsure about mixing raw egg directly with your rice, I recommend first mixing the egg with soy sauce separately, and then dipping your rice into it little by little. It’s a fun and gentle way to enjoy the flavor!

Let’s enjoy the simple joy of tamago kake gohan together!
