How I Deal with Window Condensation in Winter in a Japanese Home

In winter, windows in Japanese homes often get covered with condensation.
I used to think it was just something unavoidable, so I didn’t pay much attention to it.

However, one winter I noticed mold starting to appear around the windows.
That was a wake-up call.

If condensation is left untreated, it can easily lead to mold, which may cause health problems.
Since I have young children, I decided to take proper measures to keep our home as healthy as possible.

In this post, I’ll share the items I’ve personally used and found effective for dealing with winter condensation.

What I Bought to Reduce Condensation

Dehumidifier (Used in a North-Facing 6 Tatami Room)

We run a dehumidifier overnight in a north-facing room (about 6 tatami mats in size), where moisture tends to build up easily.

By morning, the water tank is completely full, which really shows how humid the room gets during the night.

After using a dehumidifier:
• Window condensation has reduced dramatically
• Wiping windows in the morning has become much easier

It’s one of those items that made me think, “I should have bought this sooner.”

Moisture Absorbers for Windows

These moisture absorbers are placed near the bottom of the window.
They’re extremely easy to use—just place them and forget about them.

They’re not as powerful as a dehumidifier, but they definitely help.
I buy them every winter because even a small reduction in moisture makes a difference.

Towels for Wiping Condensation (Microfiber)

For wiping condensation, microfiber towels are by far the best option.

They:
• Absorb a lot of water
• Leave fewer streaks
• Don’t require frequent wringing

Thanks to them, my morning routine is much less stressful.

When Mold Has Already Appeared

Even with preventive measures, mold can sometimes appear.

Mold Remover (Safe for Wood and Tatami)

I use a mold remover that can be applied to wood and tatami mats, which is very common in Japanese homes.

After using it, mold is much less likely to return.
Using a finishing anti-mold spray afterward makes it even more effective.

It also works well on the rubber seals around window frames, leaving them surprisingly clean.

⚠️ These mold removal products contain strong chemicals, so I always use them when my children are not in the room.

Final Thoughts

Dealing with condensation early is much easier than cleaning up mold later.

In homes with children, condensation isn’t just a cosmetic issue—it can become a hidden health risk.
That’s why I try to take simple but consistent measures every winter.

I hope this post helps anyone struggling with window condensation in winter, especially those living in humid climates or Japanese-style homes.
