As a mom raising two little ones (a 2-year-old and a newborn), I wanted to share the baby items we truly used and found helpful during the newborn stage.
These are not things we bought just because they were popular — they are items that made daily life easier, especially during those exhausting first months.
🥇 1. Electric Nasal Aspirator
From the newborn stage, my baby often had a stuffy nose, and this was one of the most helpful items we owned.
With newborns, even visible boogers can be surprisingly hard to remove because their nostrils are so small. A nasal aspirator made it much easier to clear the nose gently.
After using it, my baby could breathe more comfortably and often became calmer right away.
This is the baby product I felt “I’m so glad we have this” about the most.
🥈 2. Bed-in-Bed
With my first child, we used a traditional baby crib. However, since our family sleeps on futons in a Japanese-style room, getting up repeatedly at night for feeding was exhausting.
For our second baby, we placed a bed-in-bed right next to our futon. Being able to sleep side by side made night feedings and soothing much easier.
The one we use is compact and foldable, so we could also take it with us when traveling. It was incredibly useful until our baby started rolling over.
🥉 3. Nursing Light (Night Light)
Newborns need frequent nighttime feedings and diaper changes, so a soft nursing light was a lifesaver.
It provides just enough light to see what you’re doing without turning on the room lights.
This helped keep our baby sleepy and also prevented us from waking up our older child.
We use a touch-operated light with adjustable brightness, and it has become a must-have for nighttime care.
4. Cotton Sleep Sack
Both of our children have used cotton sleep sacks since they were newborns. Cotton is breathable and absorbent, making it ideal for babies.
To reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), we avoid using blankets and rely on sleep sacks instead.
We use lighter 2–3 layer gauze sleep sacks in summer and thicker 6-layer versions in winter. They are practical, safe, and suitable for year-round use.
5. Large Muslin Cloths
We have used large muslin cloths constantly from the newborn stage, and even our 2-year-old still uses them.
They are incredibly versatile:
• Placed inside the bed-in-bed to protect against spills
• Used as a stroller sunshade or air-conditioning cover
• Rolled into a donut shape as a pillow alternative
• Used as a towel after bath time
We own about eight of them between both children, and they are one of the most cost-effective baby items we’ve bought.
Final Thoughts
Every family is different, but these five items genuinely made our newborn days smoother and less stressful.
If you’re raising a baby in Japan or considering life here with a newborn, I hope this list helps you decide what’s truly worth having.
